Flow (2024)

As a kid I loved ‘The Incredible Journey’ – one of those Disney live action films with the comforting homely voiceover (from ‘The Arizona Cowboy’ Rex Allen) that was already a good couple of decades old when it was a Sunday afternoon treat for your Nan to fall asleep in front of.

In the film a cat, – which looked like the star of the other Disney flick ‘The Cat From Outer Space’ but without the glowing collar that signified its alien origins – a Labrador and a bulldog travel across Canada overcoming mild peril and danger until they reach home.

‘Flow’ has no voiceover, no anthropomorphic animals, no talking dogs and specifically a world with no humans. Some kind of apocalyptic event is imminent as Cat, our main focus, curls up on a bed in an abandoned house surrounded Def by cat wood & stone carvings.

Animals flea as the waters start to rise and a wave engulfs the forest. Running for its life, Cat soon bands together in a sailboat with a dog, raccoon and a prairie dog, overcoming their nature to work together to survive.

They only communicate with their natural barks, clicks, yelps and mews and their behaviour natural.

There is no real sense of them trying to reach a certain point aside from high ground in the distance. Battling against the elements, predators and each other they go with the flow of the journey.

I must declare an interest in that I have a black cat with yellow eyes living with me (not saying ‘own’ as cat people will understand that’s never the deal) so my heart was already invested in the lead moggie. Yet the film has real emotional depth, grips you in perilous scenes and makes you laugh in others.

The film looks stunning and with a really atmospheric score – more realistic style than Disney cute but still giving it the big eyes to tug at your heartstrings. There are no life lessons etc but friendship, cooperation and that nature will prevail despite our best efforts.

Was part of the London Film Festival so not sure of a release date – might be in late November
